10 Questions to Ask Before Outsourcing Precision Machining

Outsourcing precision machining shouldn’t feel like a gamble - but for too many manufacturers, it does.

Missed tolerances. Slipping lead times. Communication that disappears the second the PO is signed. If you’ve been through it, you already know: choosing the wrong precision machining partner costs far more than the original quote.

At QB Manufacturing, we’ve built our reputation by often stepping in when things have already gone sideways. (Check out our QB Guarantee!) So, instead of giving you a generic checklist, here are the 10 questions we believe every manufacturer should ask before outsourcing precision machining - because they’re the same questions we expect our customers to ask us.

1. What tolerances can you consistently hold - not just occasionally?

Any shop can hit tight tolerances on a good day. The real question is consistency.

Ask:

What tolerances do you hold on a daily basis?

How do you verify and document them?

What happens when a part falls out of spec?

If the answer is vague or overly confident without data to back it up, that’s a red flag.

2. What does your quality control process look like?

“Quality is our top priority” doesn’t mean much without a system behind it.

Look for:

In-process inspections (not just final checks)

Documented procedures

Traceability for materials and parts

Calibration standards for equipment

A strong machining partner should be able to walk you through their QC process step-by-step - without hesitation.

3. What are your lead times - and how often do you hit them?

Quoted lead times and actual delivery timelines are often two different things.

Ask:

What’s your average on-time delivery rate?

How do you handle schedule changes or rush jobs?

What’s your current capacity?

A reliable shop won’t just give you a number - they’ll explain how they protect it.

4. How do you handle supply chain disruptions?

Material shortages and delays happen. What matters is how your machining partner responds.

Ask:

Do you source materials domestically, internationally, or both?

Do you maintain supplier relationships or backups?

How do you communicate delays?

The right partner won’t leave you guessing when something shifts.

5. Can you support both prototyping and production?

Switching vendors between prototype and production stages creates risk - especially with precision parts.

Ask:

Can you scale with us?

What changes between prototype and production runs?

How do you ensure consistency across both?

A true partner grows with your operation, not just your first order.

6. What industries do you typically serve?

Experience matters - especially when tolerances, materials, and compliance requirements vary by industry.

A shop familiar with your space will:

Understand your standards

Anticipate challenges

Reduce onboarding time

Ask:

Who have you helped that is similar to my company?

Afterall, if you’re spending time educating your vendor, you’re already behind.

7. How do you communicate throughout a project?

One of the biggest frustrations when outsourcing machining is silence.

Ask:

Who is my point of contact?

How often will I get updates?

How are issues communicated?

At QB, we believe communication should be proactive - not reactive. You shouldn’t have to chase down answers.

8. What happens when something goes wrong?

Because at some point, something will.

Ask:

How do you handle non-conforming parts?

What’s your turnaround time for corrections?

Do you take ownership or shift blame?

This is where the difference between a vendor and a partner becomes clear.

Past performance is one of the best indicators of future results.

Look for:

Real-world problem solving

Tight deadline recoveries

Complex or high-precision work

If a shop can’t point to specific wins, it’s worth asking why.

10. Are you focused on price - or long-term value?

Low quotes are tempting. But in machining, you usually get what you pay for - and then pay for it again later.

Ask yourself:

Will this partner reduce risk?

Will they improve our efficiency?

Will they help us move faster?

The right machining partner isn’t an expense - they’re an investment in a competitive advantage.

Outsourcing precision machining isn’t just about making parts. It’s about protecting your timelines, your quality standards, and your reputation.

At QB Manufacturing, we’ve seen what happens when these 10 questions don’t get asked early enough. That’s why we encourage every potential customer to ask them - whether they work with us or not.

Because the right partner won’t just give you answers.

They’ll give you confidence in every order that follows.

When you’re evaluating machining partners or need a second look at an upcoming project, QB Manufacturing is always ready to step in and help you get it right the first time.
